The First and the Last

Assailed by words and silence
Bewildered by blows undeserved
Cowering in confusion
Dismissed and discounted, disowned,
Emotions condemned as unworthy,
Guilt grows and gnaws at the soul.
Hungry for hugs and holding,
Isolation injures identity.
Jealous of siblings preferred,
Kicking against the
Message
‘Never
OK’
Punished unfairly,
Quivering with
Rage repressed,
Silently suffering
Torment, the soul
Understands the
Vicious verity that it
Would be better to be
Expunged, crossed out, to
Yield to the
Zone of despair.

And F is for
Fear, the
First word.

For Fear lurks
Hidden in the
Depths of the
Soul
Behind every
Thought, word, deed
Fear
Paralyses play
Fear
Fuels the drive to please
Fear
Demands perfection
Fear
Fear of the
‘Never
OK’

Fear takes words of comfort, of promise
Transforms them
Into words of condemnation, of despair – for
Fear
Frustrates all attempts to
reach out, reassure, touch, heal.
Fear blinds to love offered,
Binds the soul in chains.

And yet,
And yet –
L is for Love, and
Love
Persists
Love
Holds fast
Love
Perseveres
Love
Brooks no denial
And slowly,
Oh so slowly
The frightened soul
Begins to trust, to believe
Slowly
Oh so slowly
Love
Seeps into the
Frightened heart,
Seeps in through the
Cracks, the fissures,
Seeps in through the
Scars, the wounds.
As Love flows in,
Anger erupts at last –
Anger at all the years of imprisonment
All the years in bondage to
Fear
and
Love reaches out, shows
His scars, His wounds.
Love
Touches
In the embrace of
one who cares
In the smile of
one who welcomes,
In the acceptance of
one who takes the
Anger at last expressed,
Passes it on to Him
On the soul’s
Behalf
So that
Wounds
are healed by the fount of
Love
Flowing from the
Wounded Healer
Through
wounded healers.
This perfect Love,
Expressed and experienced,
Drives out all fear
For the Last word shall be
Love
